Law Department

The Canton Law Department is responsible for a wide variety of services provided to:

  • Area law enforcement agencies
  • City departments
  • City employees
  • The Courts
  • The public

The law department takes an active role regionally by participating in the Stark Council of Governments (SCOG) and by working closely with the Stark County Prosecutor's Office.

The Law Department is comprised of two divisions: the Civil Division and the Criminal Division. The Law Department is headed by the City Law Director, who is responsible for the administration of the department and is elected at-large every four years.

The Law Director and his staff provide representation for:

  • Auditor
  • City Commissions and Boards
  • City Council
  • Department Heads
  • Mayor
  • Treasurer

Areas of Expertise

The Law Department provides legal representation in such diverse areas as zoning, civil service, health, income tax, and building and code enforcement. Legal representation is also provided to the Fair Housing Commission, Park Commission, Planning Commission and other commissions and oversight groups.
