Law Department

Our office takes complaints and intakes over the phone, or in person. You can contact our office at (330) 489-3395 for assistance—or come in person—from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. If an in person meeting is determined to be necessary, our staff will set an appointment time for you to come in.


The Canton Law Department is responsible for a wide variety of services provided to:

  • Area law enforcement agencies
  • City departments
  • City employees
  • The Courts
  • The public

The law department takes an active role regionally by participating in the Stark Council of Governments (SCOG) and by working closely with the Stark County Prosecutor’s Office.

The Law Department is comprised of two divisions: the Civil Division and the Criminal Division. The Law Department is headed by the City Law Director, who is responsible for the administration of the department and is elected at-large every four years.

Areas of Expertise

The Law Department provides legal representation in such diverse areas as zoning, civil service, health, income tax, and building and code enforcement. Legal representation is also provided to the Fair Housing Commission, Park Commission, Planning Commission and other commissions and oversight groups.
