Training Academy

The Training Bureau helps the Canton Police Department maintain the highest degree of professional policing for the Department. By administering ongoing training, screening new recruit applicants, and facilitating OPOTA-certified training sessions for officers, the Training Division ensures that Canton Police Officers are a cut above the rest.

Functions

Some of the functions of the Training Division include:

  • BAC Datamaster Testing (In Conjunction with Ohio Department of Health)
  • K-9 Operations
  • New Recruit Orientation
  • New Recruit Physical Agility Testing

Required Training

Police Officers in Canton are required to undergo forty hours of in-service training each year. This training includes mandated state certification requirements in firearms duty (handgun and shotgun). Courses have included:

  • Autism Awareness
  • Computer Training
  • CPR/AED Certification
  • Glock and Straight-Baton Re-Certification
  • Hood Drill Training
  • OUAD Training
  • OVI/ADAP/In-Car Video Training
  • Religious Diversity Awareness
  • Simulator Glock Training
