Instructions:
- Go to GovernmentJobs.com and complete the job application
- When completing your application be sure to submit a legible image of your valid driver's license or state photo I.D., resume, college transcripts or diploma, high school transcripts or diploma, certificates, form DD214, and any other relevant documents.
- If you forget to attach a document or you completed a certification (ex: OPOTA) after you submit your application, but before the application period closes; you can email them to jobs@cantonohio.gov.

Safety Forces Application Instructions:
Not sure what steps to take to apply for our Firefighter/Paramedic or Police Officer jobs and what you need to include on the application?
- Fill out an application on governmentjobs.com.
- Before submitting your application make sure you have submitted ALL REQUIRED documents (driver's license and high school diploma) and ALL APPLICABLE BONUS documents. Important note: The application only requires your driver's license and high school diploma in order to complete the application. The application does not require you to submit any bonus attachments in order to complete the application. This is because not every applicant has bonus attachments such as a Bachelor's degree or DD-214. For those who do have bonus documents, you MUST submit them with your application.
- The required documents are your driver's license and your high school diploma or GED
- The bonus documents are your college degree or transcripts (if you attended college), and your DD-214 (if you were in the military)
- Police Applications: include your Ohio Peace Officer Training Academy Certification (if applicable)
- Fire Applications: include your current EMT Paramedic Certification, current Basic EMT Certification, and current Ohio State Department of Education Certification (Firefighter II) (if applicable)
- If you do not attach all required documents, you may be disqualified from further consideration.
- You must ensure that your attachments are legible and current, we cannot offer bonus credit on expired certifications.
- The Canton Civil Service staff will review your application. If you meet the minimum requirements and have all necessary documentation uploaded, your name will be referred to the National Testing Network and you will be invited to take the written exam for the relevant safety position.
- You will be required to fill out the Personal History Questionnaire on the National Testing Network website. This document is necessary to complete background investigations. The PHQ should be completed as soon as possible to be considered further in the hiring process. Complete your PHQ before you take your exam or right afterward.

IMPORTANT NOTICE TO VETERANS:
As provided in ORC 124.23C, any person who has completed service in the uniformed services, who have been honorably discharged from the uniformed services or transferred to the reserve with evidence of satisfactory service, and who is an Ohio resident and any member of a reserve component of the armed forces of the United States, including the Ohio National Guard, who has completed more than 180 days of active duty service pursuant to an executive order of the President of the United States or an act of Congress of the United States may file with the director a certificate of service or honorable discharge (DD-214 – Long version), and upon this filing, the person shall receive an additional credit of twenty percent (20%) of the person’s total grade given in the examination in which the person receives a passing grade.
A member in good standing of a reserve component of the armed forces of the United States, including the Ohio National Guard, who successfully completes the member’s initial entry-level training shall receive a credit of fifteen percent (15%) of the person’s total grade given in the examination in which the person receives a passing grade.
- Testing Bonuses for Police Officers:
- OPOTA: Ohio Peace Officer certification is a 20% score bonus, Veteran bonus up to 20%, college bonus for Bachelor’s 20%, Associate’s Degree 10%. Maximum of 20% bonus for passing score. Equal Opportunity Employer. Documents for bonus credit must be received with the application.
- Testing Bonus for Firefighters/Paramedics:
- Bachelor’s Degree: Upon receiving a passing score, a ten percent (10%) bonus will be granted if a diploma or transcript of college grades is submitted when required (unofficial transcripts are acceptable). Credit will be granted if all degree requirements are met by the end of the application period.
- Associate’s Degree in Fire Science: Upon receiving a passing score, a five percent (5%) bonus will be granted. Documents for this credit include a copy of a college diploma provided the name of the degree, i.e., Fire Science is named on the diploma or a transcript of college grades (unofficial transcripts are acceptable). Credit will be granted if all degree requirements are met by the end of the application period.
- Certified EMT Paramedic: Upon receiving a passing score, a twenty percent (20%) bonus credit will be granted to all persons who hold a current certificate as an Emergency Medical Technician-Paramedic issued by the State of Ohio or certification as a Nationally Registered Paramedic. A copy of the certificate must be submitted when required.
- Certified Basic EMT: Upon receiving a passing score, a ten percent (10%) bonus credit will be granted to all persons who hold a current certificate of an Emergency Medical Technician issued by the State of Ohio. A copy of the certificate must be submitted when required.
- Ohio State Department of Education Certification: Upon receiving a passing score, a twenty percent (20%) credit will be granted to all persons who hold a certificate issued by the Ohio State Department of Education stating they satisfactorily completed the minimum “Full-Time Paid Firefighter Course”. A copy of the certificate must be submitted when required.
- Canton Fire Department Observers Program: A five percent (5%) bonus credit will be granted to all persons who provide a certificate of completion for successfully completing the Canton Fire Department Explorers Program.
