MEDIA ADVISORY:  Canton Cares Grant Program

CANTON, Ohio – On Monday, July 26, 2021, Canton City Council passed an ordinance which authorized the use of $1,150,000.00 of American Rescue Plan Act fund dollars to implement Canton’s Small Business COVID-19 Grant Relief Program. The City of Canton Small Business COVID-19 Grant Relief Program is a grant fund that has been created by the City of Canton, in partnership with the Economic and Community Development Institute (ECDI), to provide Canton businesses, that employ fifty (50) or less full-time equivalent employees, and were impacted by the pandemic, up to $25,000 in pandemic relief.

Businesses have been subject to mandatory and voluntary closures as well as cancellations or postponements of operations, events, and other essential activities. Qualifying Canton-located businesses who have experienced these business interruptions are able to receive grant funds from this program to assist with costs associated with the COVID-19 pandemic. This program will terminate once all funds have been granted to Canton small businesses.

Mayor Thomas Bernabei stated “We are pleased to provide financial assistance to Canton based small businesses that have been negatively impacted by the pandemic. In 2020 we provided approximately $750,000.00 in Cares Act funding to small businesses.  We are pleased to be able to provide an additional $1,000,000.00 plus in American Rescue Plan Act funding to small businesses this year. Our small businesses need our support.”

“Progress has been made, but we are not out of the woods yet, when it comes to pandemic recovery. We anticipate that small businesses – especially the local Main Street companies that make up our neighborhoods and communities – will experience economic effects for months or years to come,” said Inna Kinney, Founder and CEO of ECDI. “Our partnership with the City of Canton aims to help these vital businesses, and the jobs they create, survive and thrive into the future. I applaud Canton leadership and their focus on small business retention and job creation strategies. ECDI is honored to be a part of this monumental effort.”

Organizations interested in applying for this program may submit their application through the City of Canton’s website at www.cantonohio.gov starting at 8:00 AM on Monday, September 13, 2021 through 5:00 PM on Monday, September 20, 2021.  In order to accommodate potential applicants unable to access electronic materials, applicants should contact Denise Hicks, dhicks@ecdi.org, at ECDI to access hard copy materials and discuss the related submission of those materials.
